Installing a network printer on your Windows 7 PC

Installing a Phaser 8570/8870

This guide is for installing a networked Phaser 8570/8870 printer in the King Life Sciences Building. It assumes that you are using an administrator account. Other networked printers will have similar steps, but you will need to download their specific drivers for your operating system (windows 7 64-bit is the standard in the Kin building) from the manufacturer's website.

  1. Download Xerox Phaser 8570 64-bit installer (for 32-bit systems the installer is here.)
    1. Double-click the file to open it and, if prompted, press run.
  2. Change the installation path to C:\Install\Xerox\P8570_PS_x64_Driver.
    1. Click install, the installer will extract the driver files and save them to the selected location, close itself, and open up the windows Add Printer screen.
  3. Click Add a local printer.
  4. Check the Use an existing port: dropdown list to see if your printer's IP address is already listed. If you do not know your printer's IP address there is a list for the public printers here and instructions for finding the IP of non-public printers here. Once you find it, write it down; you will need it again later.
    1. If the IP is listed, select it, click Next, and SKIP step 5.
    2. If the IP is not listed, select Create a new port. Type of port: Standard TCP/IP Port. Click Next and
      DO step 5.
  5. Type the printer's IP address into the Hostname or IP address: field. The port name should default to the IP; leave it alone. Uncheck Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use, then click Next.
  6. Now select Xerox Phaser 8570DN PS from the list and click Next.
  7. Change the printer name to Kin****-Xerox8570 (the **** is the room number the printer is in and if installing a different model substitute the manufacturer's name for "Xerox" and the model number for "8570"). Click Next.
  8. Select Do not share this printer and click Next.
  9. If you want this to be your default printer leave Set as default printer checked, otherwise uncheck it. Print a test page to make sure the printer was installed correctly, then click Finish.

Installing a HP 400 M401n

This guide is for installing a HP Laserjet 400 M401n printer in the King Life Sciences Building. It assumes that you are using an administrator account on a PC.

  2. From the Windows desktop, click Start , and then click Devices and Printers or Printers. Click Add a printer. Now click Add a local printer.
  3. Check the Use an existing port: dropdown list to see if your printer's IP address is already listed. If you do not know your printer's IP address there is a list for the public printers here and instructions for finding the IP of non-public printers here. Once you find it, write it down; you will need it again later.
    1. If the IP is listed, select it, click Next, and SKIP step 4.

      DO step 4.
  4. Type the printer's IP address into the Hostname or IP address: field. The port name should default to the IP; leave it alone. Uncheck Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use, then click Next.
  5. Click the Have Disk... button. Click the Browse... button. Navigate to C:\HP_LaserJet_400_M401 and select hpcm401c.inf. Click Open. Click OK. Now select HP LaserJet 400 M401 PCL 6 from the list and click Next.

Determining a printer's IP Address

To install a printer following the instructions on this page you need to know its IP address. If you cannot find it in the printer list the following instructions may help.

For a Phaser 6360, you can find it by walking up to the printer and using it's built-in menu screen. Select Information; Printer Identification; then scroll down to where it says TCP/IPv4 address: 128.186.17*.*** (the *'s can be any number 0-9). You can also find it by printing a configuration page from the menu. Select Information; Information Pages; Configuration Page.

Other Models will always have a configuration page and many will have a menu option to view the network configuration directly in the menu screen. Typically they will be found in submenues titled a variation of: Identification, Configuration, Network, or Settings.
