Outline of the graduation process

  • Email April Wooten your commencement information (see below)
  • Make sure that you are registered for your MS/PhD defense! It is better to register and not defend this term, rather than defend without registering!
  • Apply for graduation and provide commencement info
  • confirm that all degree requirements upto the defense have been met.
  • Set a defense date
  • Meet initial formatting deadline
  • Announce defense date (at least 2 weeks prior to defense)
  • Defend successfully.
  • Meet the final formatting deadline
  • Complete departmental paperwork

Commencement Info

Please e-mail April Wooten at awooten@bio.fsu.edu : which one of the following statements applies to you:

  • will graduate this term and will participate in commencement
  • will graduate this term and will not participate in commencement
  • will not graduate this term but plan to participate in commencement and graduate the next term
  • will not graduate this term and will not participate in commencement

If you are a PhD student then I need the following information from you regardless of whether or not you intend to participate in commencement

## Degree Requirements

Check with April Wooten to make sure all degree requirements are completed.

At least two weeks prior to defense, enter your Defense Announcement at the Manuscript Clearance Portal of the Graduate School. Also notify site.data.dept.department.graduate_coordinator}} at awooten@bio.fsu.edu, who will see that the defense is announced in BIONOTES.


Post Defense Clearance

Defense Approval Forms -- WITHIN 60 DAYS AFTER DEFENSE

  • After defending, a number of online forms need to be approved by your committee and major professor. Manuscript Signature Form, Clearance Form, University Representative Report, and Manuscript Access/Embargo Form, and Final Content Approval. These are all online at the Manuscript Clearance Portal, and your committee members will be prompted by email to sign off on your dissertation. The Final Content Approval form allows the major professor to approve any post-defense corrections.

Upon successful completion of the defense, submit the following to the Biological Science Graduate Office:

  • An updated CV with a forwarding address.

Separation Checklist

  • Download and fill out the Separation Checklist. Turn in to Debbie Jensen in the Fiscal Office, King 2065L.

NOTE: Students must complete the entire manuscript clearance process within 60 days of the defense of their manuscript. If a student is unable to successfully complete the entire process within the 60 days, they will have to redo the defense. Students can NOT receive waivers of the final semester registration policy. Students are required to register for 2 hours of thesis research (BSC 5971) or 2 hours of dissertation research (BSC 6980), as appropriate, the semester the degree is awarded.


Miscellaneous

Students using the Marine Lab for any part of their thesis or dissertation research should supply the Marine Lab with a ring-bound copy of the final document. The department will cover the costs of copying and binding this copy.

If you still need your computer account after graduation, contact Alex Stuy, 2054 KIN. Don’t forget to leave a forwarding address with Departmental Clerical Office, 2065 KIN, as well as the Biology Graduate Office.
