General Information about our Department

Admission Requirements

To apply for the MS or PhD program, you will need to take the GRE, have an upper-division GPA above 3.0, and submit 3 letters of recommendation. (International students from non-English speaking countries are required to take the TOEFL exam.) For more details, see the Admissions Requirments and How to Apply pages.


Degree Requirements

Financial Support

All students admitted to the Thesis MS or PhD degree programs are offered financial support either as a teaching assistant, or a research assistant. Top students may be offered a prestigious Presidential, University or College Fellowship.

Stipends are $22399.26 (Thesis MS) and $23330.84 (PhD) annually for teaching and research assistants; students also receive a full tuition waiver.

health insurance is required?

Students on assistantships and fellowships receive a $1,300 supplement to help defray the cost of University-sponsored health insurance.

Support is provided by the Department to assist Thesis M.S or PhD graduate students to travel to scientific meetings to present their research.

No departmental financial support is available for students enrolled in the Course-Type MS degree program.

Students in Biology at FSU have access to world-class technical and intellectual resources, including:

  • Biological Science Imaging Resource
    houses a state-of-the-art Titan Krios cryo-EM system, along with other confocal, optical, and electron microscopy systems.

  • FSU Coastal & Marine Lab
    located on the Gulf Coast in St. Teresa FL, conducts innovative, interdisciplinary research focused on the coastal and marine ecosystems of the Wider Caribbean.

  • Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine
    provides consulting, data analysis support, and training for research projects with genomic components, to relieve the analytical bottleneck of genomic research projects.

  • Godfrey Herbarium
    a museum-quality biodiversity research collection of about 210,000 plant and microalgae specimens.

  • Analytical and Molecular Core Labs
    incorporate state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for performing biological analyses, developing methods to aid in research, and training faculty and graduate students in equipment operation and research techniques.

  • National High Magnetic Field Lab
    houses the world's most powerful magnets used a variety of biological and chemical experiemnts, including the world’s strongest MRI magnet for in vivo imaging.
