2002 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 1 Mar 06)

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, 18 April 2002, in the Governor's Ballroom, 5301 University Center "C," the Chartering Ceremony of the Sigma Tau chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Honorary Biological Fraternity took place, and 29 founding members were initiated.

On Friday, 1 March 2002, the department's herbarium was officially named for Dr. Robert K. Godfrey (view the brochure). Bob Godfrey retired from the department in 1974 and died in 2000 (visit the herbarium's website).

  • Professor Kenneth A. Taylor was named an FSU Distinguished Research Professor.

  • Professor W. Ross Ellington was awarded a named professorship and honored a former FSU colleague, Dr. Michael J. Greenberg, by becoming the Michael J. Greenberg Professor of Biological Science.

  • Professor William H. Outlaw Jr. was awarded a named professorship and honored a retired FSU colleague, Dr. Peter F. Homann, by becoming the Peter F. Homann Professor of Biological Science.

  • Associate Professor Paul Q. Trombley received an FSU Developing Scholar Award.

  • Associate Professor Thomas C. S. Keller III received the department's Loretta Ellias Award for undergraduate teaching.

Obituaries

  • Professor Emeritus Pasquale P. Graziadei died 2 June 2002. Dr. Graziadei joined the department in 1967 and remained an active teacher and researcher until his retirement in 1996. In 2000, Dr. Frances C. James honored her late colleague by becoming the Pasquale P. Graziadei Professor of Biological Science.

  • Taimi Lynne Hoag (B.S. 1996), who worked in Dr. Travis's laboratory from her graduation until January of 1999, died 12 December 2002 in Petoskey, Michigan.

  • Dr. Adrian W. Poitras. Dr. Poitras was on the department's faculty 1958-1961.
