Young Scholars Program

Office of STEM Teaching Activities

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Young Scholars Program is highly structured and students are expected to remain engaged in the program during evenings and weekends. The classes, laboratories, and seminars offered are all academically-oriented and are a fundamental part of the curriculum, but athletic and social activities are also important. Social activities that are coordinated by the YSP staff may include evening movies, beach and lake parties, dances, and day trips to several local recreational areas.

Weekend trips are considered part of the program scheduling and attendance is mandatory. Students may also choose to participate in optional extracurricular activities, including trips to the movies, dinners at restaurants, music lessons, and gym membership.

Weekend trips have included destinations and activities such as:
  • Wakulla Springs
  • Canoeing
  • Scavenger Hunts
  • Themed Dances
  • Fourth of July Fireworks
  • YSP Olympics
  • St. George Island State Park

Each student may participate in a variety of non-sponsored recreational activities at the dormitory, including workouts in the fitness center, ping pong, billiards, and board games. There are many basketball, racquetball, soccer, and tennis facilities on campus, but participants must bring their own equipment to the facilities and follow posted rules.
