Topic 33. Sartorius muscle recording arrangement.

The sartorius muscle is a flat, thin muscle arising at the pelvis and inserting at the knee, on the ventromedial aspect of the hind leg (see #3 in Fig. 13). It can be isolated together with its nerve, which enters near the middle of the muscle. The sartorius is a popular muscle for the study of neuromuscular transmission, but in the present exercises, responses are evoked not by nerve stimulation but by direct stimulation of the muscle at one (either) end, away from the nerve entry.
Sartorius muscle direct stimulation

Recording arrangement for sartorius direct stimulation.

The arrangement in the recording chamber is essentially similar to that for the gastrocnemius, but the muscle is stimulated directly. Tube R can be slid along the muscle to adjust the length of muscle (x) between stimulating and recording tubes.
