Black Swallowtail caterpillar on the dill plant

Sealey Elementary School has maintained a butterfly garden for educational uses for the past several. This garden was originally developed with help from the Sealey Sodbusters, a volunteer group of students and their parents. The goals of the garden are to provide examples of plants and flowers for classes, as well as serving as a resource for students to understand the relationship between plants, which serve as food for both caterpillars and adult butterflies, and the insects themselves, which pollinate the flowers of the plants. Work in the garden is now organized by Carolyn Teregawa and Alice Winn.

This site is divided into four sections. The Plant Page (incomplete) provides information about plants and maintaining your own butterfly garden. The Butterfly Life Page describes the life cycle of butterflies, using monarchs as an example. The Butterflies Page can help you identify garden visitors in our area as well as provide some information on their natural history. Finally, the Bugs and Other Creatures Page (incomplete) will describe some of the other visitors to the Sealey Butterfly Garden.

Feel free to browse; we will try to remember to update this page seasonally. The page will likely constantly be underconstruction.
