NOTES ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Picture Proportions: 74 pixels wide by 80 pixels high. [Since we are maintaining the proportions of the orginal FSU Card Pic] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Picture Type: Use only picture files of type .JPG (jpeg). If original file is of some other format, open it in Paint Shop Pro or some other editor and Save As (select jpg under file type) a JPEG file. [if you are queried about the file compression when saving, choose a low compression which means better picture quality] If file is pdf, open it in Acrobat and export (File --> Export) it as a jpeg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Display Script: The script automatically resizes the display parameters to 80 pixels if the source image is larger than 80 pixels. It proportionately resizes the width. However if the width of the source image after resizing is greater than 120 pixwls, it'll resize it to 120 pixels. But that is a rare case since potrait pics generally are longer than wider. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Resizing: It is preferable to resize the images to 74 pixels wide by 80 pixels high in Paint Shop Pro or some other Photo Editor. How to: Open picture in Paint Shop Pro (PSP). Open a 74x80 pic from the existing grad pics as a sample (just to compare). Case 1: If the picture is too big. In PSP click on the image to be resized and then from the menu select Image - > Resize. In the Resize Window: See that the 'Maintain aspect Ratio' is checked. Select - > Percentage of Original See that width and height is at 100%. [if you look at Pixel Size, it'll tell you the actual curent size and width of the pic.] Compare it to the sample pic you have. Reduce the size accordingly. Look at facial features and size of head. You could reduce dimensions by 10% and then compare and then reduce again and so forth. Once your subject is more or less the required size we shall crop (or pad) the image to the required size. In PSP, from the menu select Image -> Canvas Size. In the Canvas Size window see that Center Image Horizontally and Center Image Vertically is checked. Enter 73 pixels for New Width Enter 80 pixels for New Height. Click Ok. Save it as the students biology user id. (kovoor@bio.fsu.edu, kovoor=userid). Case 2: If the picture is too small, follow the above instructions, but increase picture size in increments of 10%. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Centering: Use the Crop Tool. (the rectangular hashed line box on the tool bar). Select a rectangle in the approximate proportions of the final image centered round the head. If appropriately centered, on the menu bar goto Image --> Crop to Selection. Alternatively, from the menu select Image --> Canvas Size. Uncheck the Center Image Horizontally/Vertically. Add in the appropriate number of pixels to be snipped off from the top or bottom, left or right to make the image look centered. (eg the image needs to move a bit to the left, type '-10' for 'Left'). Click ok. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Uploading: Upload the picture to /usr/local/www/data/gradstudentinfo/gradpics. In the grad database add in the link for mugshotpic: eg. gradstudentinfo/gradpics/userid.jpg Avoid using http:/www.bio.fsu.edu/gradstudentinfo/gradpics/userid.jpg -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
