Thursday, April 7 – Thursday, April 7, 10:30 am – 10:30 am, 2021 KIN—PLANT SCIENCES SEMINAR, "Cytogenetics and evolution revealing new features of the maize heterochromatic knobs," Prof. Mateus Mondin-Mudinho, Department of Genetics, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Host: Dr. Henry W. (Hank) Bass, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University. Maize heterochromatic knobs are conspicuous structures visualized in the chromosomes. Nobel Laureate Barbara McClintock famously used knobs to establish that genetic (linkage) recombination was based on meiotic chromosome crossovers. Knobs variability seems to correlate to biogeography clines and some phenotypic traits. Our research group derived near-isogenic inbred lines differing in knob composition, allowing isolation of possible effects restricted to these heterochromatic structures, mainly linked to flowering time. A search for the knob origin through the study of the satellite DNA K180 reveals an exciting connection between maize and its ancestors, including non-waited stability during evolution.
