NRC publication and citation counts

The Florida State University Method
for Obtaining "NRC-style" Publication and Citation Counts

The table below contains the raw data entries for publications attributed to Dr. Lawrence G. Abele at Florida State University during preparation of the 1995 NRC Report, as they were supplied by ISI to NRC. The only changes I have made are (a) to space the columns apart for ease of reading (in the original data table, for example, the first 6 columns are run together without intervening spaces) and (b) to shorten a couple of the entries in column 2 by one space to make them fit neatly in the cells of my table. Each row represents one paper of which Dr. Abele was an author, and these are the only papers he published during 1981-1992 that were counted for the report. The columns represent, in order from left to right:

Column 1: A 5-digit number uniquely designating the author (00070 = Lawrence G. Abele at zip code 32306). A separate table of NRC data (not shown here) equates authors and institutions with their code numbers
Column 2: A 4-digit number uniquely designating the publication. The numbers were in hexadecimal (which could pack more numbers into only four digits), so the numbers look like gibberish here. Each of these publication numbers will appear once in the data base for each author of the paper.
Column 3: Supposedly, P means that Dr. Abele is first author of the paper and S means he is not. These data are clearly not accurate (as the next column indicates his position in the authorship), but so far as I can tell, NRC did not use them.
Column 4: A 1-digit number indicating the author's position in the order of authorship.
Column 5: A 1-digit number indicating the total number of authors on the publication.
Column 6: A 2-digit number indicating the year of publication.
Column 7: A 1-character code for the type of publication. A blank indicates a "regular journal article." This column is blank for all of Dr. Abele's publications except the last, which is coded "P" for "Proceedings Paper."
Column 8: A 2-character code for the language in which the paper was published. All of Dr. Abele's are in English.
Column 9: A field containing an abbreviation (of up to 11 characters) of the journal in which the publication appeared.
Column 10: The total number of citations the publication received during 1981-1992 (up to 5 digits). Note that this number is not artificially limited. It contains all the citations any of the entries had received as of the last day of 1992, when the data were truncated for transmission to NRC.
Column 11: Number of years (1981-1992) in which the publication received any citations.
Columns 12-23: The numbers of citations the publication received in each of the 12 years of 1981-1992, beginning with 1981 and proceeding left to right through 1992.
Column 24: A 3-digit code uniquely identifying the author's institution (465 = Florida State University).
