Eminent Scholar ChairThe William R. and Lenore Mote Eminent Scholar Chair in Fisheries Ecology and Enhancement was established at Florida State University in the Department of Biological Science in November of 1994 with a generous gift from the late Bill Mote (1906-2000) of Sarasota, Florida.
Mote Eminent Scholar
Dr. Peter Auster is the eighth Mote Eminent Scholar in Fisheries Ecology at Florida State University. A research professor in the University of Connecticut Department of Marine Sciences, Auster has a joint appointment in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment. He also serves as the science director for the Northeast Underwater Research Technology and Education Center (formerly the National Undersea Research Center for the North Atlantic and Great Lakes). He received his master’s degree in biological oceanography from the University of Connecticut (1985) and a Ph.D. in zoology from the National University of Ireland Galway (2000). Dr. Auster’s research focuses on the ecology and conservation of fishes. For the past 25 years, he has conducted studies intended to determine how variation in behavior and patterns of habitat use across underwater landscapes mediate the distribution and abundance of fishes. From an applied-science perspective, his studies have focused on understanding the ecological effects of fishing and on developing a scientific basis for using marine protected areas as a conservation tool. This work has spanned the globe; he has served as a scientist or chief scientist on over 35 major research cruises and a multitude of day trips in the northwest Atlantic, Gulf of Alaska, Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, South China Sea, Sea of Cortez, and equatorial Pacific. In his work, he employs techniques under water that are similar to those used by wildlife biologists on land. That is, he makes direct underwater observations of how individual animals respond to variations in nature. He uses SCUBA, research submersibles, remotely operated vehicles, and autonomous vehicles for much for this work, which has resulted in over 120 scholarly and technical publications. Auster serves on a number of panels and committees that are focused on marine resource management and conservation, and he is involved in multiple outreach initiatives aimed at informing the public about marine conservation issues.
