WILLIAM R. AND LENORE MOTE
EMINENT SCHOLAR CHAIR

Mote Eminent Scholar, 2004

Dr. Ana María Parma has been appointed the fourth William R. and Lenore Mote Eminent Scholar at Florida State University and the Mote Marine Laboratory.

Parma received her Licenciatura in botany at the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de la Plata, Argentina, and her Ph.D. in fisheries at the University of Washington, Seattle.

She has been working in fisheries research for 20 years. She has been a researcher at the Instituto de Biologia Marina y Pesquera in Argentina, the University of British Columbia, the University of Washington, the International Pacific Halibut Commission, and most recently the National Research Council of Argentina. Her 1989 doctoral dissertation at the University of Washington, under Drs. Deriso and Chapman, was titled Contributions to stochastic models for the management of exploited fish populations. Ana's main research interest is in developing stock-assessment methodology and robust harvesting strategies. She has worked with stock assessments in data-rich situations such as Pacific halibut, New Zealand hoki, sablefish, and Chilean lobster. Ana has also been involved in developing stock-assessment methods in data-poor situations such as coastal, artisanal fisheries in Chile and Argentina. This wealth of experience, reported in over 25 publications, places Ana in a strategic position to discuss fisheries assessments when only limited data are available. She also serves on the Commission for Conservation of Southern Ocean Blue Fin Tuna.
