WILLIAM R. AND LENORE MOTE
EMINENT SCHOLAR CHAIR

Mote Eminent Scholar, 2006-2007

Dr. Kai Lorenzen Dr. Kai Lorenzen is the seventh William R. and Lenore Mote Eminent Scholar in Fisheries Ecology at Florida State University and the Mote Marine Laboratory. He is currently Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Aquatic Resource Ecology at Imperial College London. Dr Lorenzen received a Master's degree in Fisheries Biology with Mathematics from Kiel University (1993), and a Ph.D. in Applied Population Biology from the University of London (1997). He worked as a fisheries development consultant from 1992 to 1996, and took up his faculty position in 1997.

Research

Dr Lorenzen’s research centres on aquatic resource systems at the interface of capture fisheries and aquaculture, in particular fisheries stock and habitat enhancements. A major interest of his has been the development of population dynamics theory and quantitative methods for assessing the role of enhancements within fisheries management systems. In support of this work, Dr Lorenzen also conducts basic research on size and density-dependent processes in fish population dynamics. A second major interest has been in analysing and managing the impacts of harvesting and environmental change on tropical small-scale fisheries. Dr Lorenzen’s research combines mathematical modelling with large-scale field studies, and often engages directly with management initiatives. He complements his ecological research with professional interests in the design of management systems and the interactions between research, management practice and environmental policy.

Dr Lorenzen’s work was been published in over 50 peer reviewed publications, book chapters, manuals, and software packages. He has given plenary lectures at various meetings, and recently delivered the opening keynote at the 3rd International Symposium on Stock Enhancement and Sea Ranching, Seattle, 2006.
