The program in Ecology and
Evolution is currently searching to fill one position in the broad area of
molecular evolutionary biology. The advertisement as it appears in Science
magazine:
The Ecology and Evolution group of the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Molecular Evolutionary Biology to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. We have a particular interest in a plant systematist or a microbial ecologist/evolutionary biologist but will consider any excellent candidate broadly defined as a molecular evolutionary biologist. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program and to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching. For more information about the position, please go to http://www.bio.fsu.edu/molevol. Each applicant should submit a CV, description of research interests and goals, statement of teaching interests, and selected reprints. Each applicant should also provide names and contact information for three references and arrange to have letters of recommendation sent to the search committee. All application materials including letters must be received by 15 November 2002. Application materials should be mailed to Molecular Evolutionary Biology Search Committee, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-1100, or be submitted electronically to MolEvol@bio.fsu.edu. Questions may be addressed to MolEvol@bio.fsu.edu. Florida State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer, committed to diversity in hiring, and a Public Records Agency. We strongly encourage all applicants to read through our web pages to find out about current faculty, facilities, and the growing program in Ecology and Evolution at Florida State University. We currently have particular needs in the areas of plant systematics and microbial ecology/evolution (see details about each area below). However, we have a tradition of searching broadly within ecology and evolution because our first priority is to find the best scientist who can interact with our group and expand our intellectual breadth. We therefore encourage applications from any excellent candidate in the broad area of molecular evolution. For those applicants that fit within plant systematics or microbial ecology/evolution, please address in your applications how you might meet our current needs in those areas as outlined below. Our interest in plant systematics is motivated by our desire to increase our expertise in whole-plant biology, continue development of a strong research group in phylogenetics, and maintain and improve the quality of our herbarium. The Ecology and Evolution Program, in conjunction with the School of Computational Science and Information Technology, is developing one of the world’s leading programs in molecular and computational phylogenetics. A botanist would complement the research interests of the current members of this group. The Robert Godfrey Herbarium has the largest collection of plants from North Florida, a region designated as a "hot spot" for plant and animal diversity. The Godfrey Herbarium contains over 195,000 specimens and is a research laboratory and community resource. Applicants who would be interested in directing the herbarium and/or using it in their research should discuss these issues in their application. Our interest in microbial ecology/evolution is motivated by our desire to expand microbial biology in research and teaching in our department. Successful applicants can expect to interact with other faculty within Ecology and Evolution, as well as faculty in cell and molecular biology. Please feel free
to e-mail us at molevol@bio.fsu.edu
if you have any questions regarding these positions.
