The Department of Biological Science was not actually formed until 1956, with the merger of the departments of Bacteriology, Botany, Physiology, and Zoology.

1940-1947: Herman Kurz was head of the Department of Botany and Bacteriology.

1947-1951: In 1947, the Department of Botany and Bacteriology split into two separate departments, and Herman Kurz remained head of the Department of Botany until 1951.
