• Professor George W. Bates received a University Teaching Award.

• Associate Professor Lloyd M. Epstein received a University Teaching Award.

• Robert O. Lawton Professor Kurt G. Hofer was among a team of seven FSU researchers who received a Center of Excellence Award from the FSU Research Foundation's Cornerstone Program.

• Professor Michael Meredith received a University Teaching Award.

• Associate Professor Robert H. Reeves received the department's Loretta Ellias Award for undergraduate teaching.

• Professor Thomas M. Roberts was awarded a named professorship and honored a retired FSU colleague, Dr. Robert B. Short, by becoming the Robert B. Short Professor of Biological Science.

• Margaret Menzel Professor of Biological Science Walter R. Tschinkel was named a Distinguished Research Professor.

  Staff Awards

• Judith A. Bowers and Steven R. Noakes were among those honored in May for 30 years of continuous service to the university. Judy is the coordinator of academic support services in the office of the associate chairman for graduate studies (some students may remember her as Judy Bradford). Steve is an engineer in the department's electrical shop.

• Four department employees, Jo-Ann Falcon, Joe Faragasso, Lori McFadden, and Linda Sims, received Arts and Sciences Exemplary Service Awards (Linda for the second time). Jo-Ann is the chairman's secretary; Joe supervises the Biology Unit I shops, Lori is a senior biological scientist in Dr. Roberts' lab, and Linda is the grants specialist in Biology Unit I.

Obituaries

James P. Hogg, retired Department of Biological Science machine shop engineer, died 28 April 2003. He served the department for 35 years. Memorial contributions can be made to the Transportation Fund for the Shriners Hospital.

Professor Emeritus Theodore P. Williams died 2 May 2003. Dr. Williams joined the Department of Biological Science in 1966 and remained a productive research scientist and popular teacher until his retirement in 2001. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sopchoppy United Methodist Church.

Professor Emeritus Ralph W. Yerger died 11 May 2003. Dr. Yerger joined the Department of Biological Science in 1950 and retired in the mid-1980s. Memorial contributions can be made to Big Bend Hospice.

Professor Emeritus Johan H. Stuy died 28 June 2003. He was a member of the Department of Biological Science 1965-1993. Memorial contributions can be made to the Leon County Human Society.

Professor Emeritus Lloyd M. Beidler died 7 August 2003. He was a member of the Department of Biological Science from 1950 until his retirement in 1993. In 2001, Biological Science professor Marc E. Freeman honored his former colleague by becoming the Lloyd M. Beidler Professor of Biological Science. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lloyd Beidler Fellowship through the FSU Foundation (for the support of graduate students in neuroscience).
