In 1981, Dr. Roseli Ocampo Friedmann received the U.S. Congressional Antarctic Service Medal from the National Science Foundation.

Associate Professor and Curator of Birds and Mammals Frances C. James received the Best Journal Article Award of the Southeastern Section of the Wildlife Society and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Professor Richard N. Mariscal was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
