1967 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 4 May 09)In 1967, a publication by Professor Peter H. Homann (Plant Physiology 42:1619-1632, 1967) became an Institute for Scientific Information "Citation Classic."An article by John D. Dwyer (St. Louis University) in Taxon (vol. 16, pp. 158-159), entitled "A new herbarium in the Canal Zone" describes the contributions to collections of Panamanian plants by many scientists, including Biological Science faculty member Robert K. Godfrey and three who received their graduate degrees from the department, Edwin Tyson, Kurt Blum, and Sydney McDaniel. In May, articles in the Florida Flambeau and St. Petersburg Times described the newly implemented FLEX (Freshman Learning Experience) program, brainchild of Biological Science faculty member Dr. Martin Roeder (who in 1966 because Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences). In this program, up to 60 volunteers from among FSU's freshman class would study independently and attend weekly discussions with a group of faculty mentors rather than attending regular class meetings. Biological Science chairman Robert W. Hull served as one of the mentors. On 1 October 1967, Biological Science held its annual picnic, at the FSU Reservation. "Cabin #2 and Picnic Area have been reserved for our use. Bring your own lunch; soft drinks and coffee will be provided. There will be volleyball, football, baseball, swimming or just restin' if that's what you want."
