In 1958-59, the department served 3042 students; 25 graduated with majors in the department, 6 received master's degrees, and 2 received doctoral degrees.

The machine shop, already in existence, was augmented and improved, under the supervision of staff member John Highsmith.

  Faculty Awards

    Dr. Lloyd M. Beidler was named the Bowditch Lecturer of 1959 by the American Physiological Society.

    Dr. Robert K. Godfrey was elected president of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Club at its annual meeting in Knoxville in April 1959.

  Student Awards

  • Charlene Long, an undergraduate biology major, and Arthur C. Borror, a graduate student, received award certificates for their outstanding student performance. These awards were sponsored by the Phi Sigma Society, a national organization devoted to the promotion of research in the biological sciences.
