In 1956, the departments of Bacteriology, Botany, Physiology, and Zoology merged to form the Department Biological Science. The new department moved from the History Building (now Williams Building) and Women's Gymnasium (now Montgomery Gym) to the General Classroom Building (now Conradi Building).
Members of the department inaugurated the Beta Beta chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national organization devoted to the promotion of research in the biological sciences.

- Professor Herman Kurz retired. He had been a member of the Florida State Faculty since 1922 and had served as head of the Department of Botany and Bacteriology, then the Department of Botany, from 1940 through 1951.
- Assistant professor Robert W. Rogers accepted a position elsewhere.

- Mary Ann Joyner, an undergraduate biology student, and W. D. Reese, a graduate student, received award certificates for their outstanding student performance.
