    • Robert B. Short Scholarship in Zoology (Deadline Oct. 1) awards up to $2,000 to a currently enrolled graduate student or senior undergraduate student with a career interest in zoology. The scholarship will support the awardee's participation in an off-campus organized research experience or training program, or specialized course of study, such as are offered at the Duke University Marine Station, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, or the Mountain Lake Biological Station. Selection of the awardee is based on academic qualifications, demonstrated interest in a career in zoology, unmet expenses associated with participation in the program, and the relevance of the proposed off-campus experience to the applicant's biological and career interests.     The purpose of the award is to provide support to college students intending to pursue careers as scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Scholarship monies not used during one academic year are not transferable to the succeeding academic year. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support. Scholars may opt to study abroad, but their Goldwater funding will be based on their U.S. institution's budget.

  • NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program (Deadline January 31)

    Provides the successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with ‘‘hands-on''/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.
